Determinants of lead level in umbilical cord blood.
Lead levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in umbilical cord blood samples of 205 consecutively born neonates and venous blood in 62 of the mothers. The mean (+/- SD) cord blood lead level was 4.7 +/- 12.1 microg/dL. In the sub sample of 62 mother-baby pairs, the mean (+/- SD) cord blood lead levels were 1.6 +/- 2.5 microg/dL and 2.0 +/- 2.1 microg/dL, respectively. Accord...
متن کاملMonitoring of umbilical cord blood lead levels and sources assessment among the Inuit.
Analyses completed on samples collected between 1993 and 1996 showed that about 7% of 475 Inuit newborns from northern Quebec (Canada) had a cord blood lead concentration equal to or greater than 0.48 micromol/l, an intervention level adopted by many governmental agencies. A comparison between the cord blood lead isotope ratios of Inuit and southern Quebec newborns showed that lead sources for ...

متن کاملLead levels in umbilical cord blood in Belgium: a cross-sectional study in five maternity units.
The average blood lead concentration has significantly decreased over the last two decades among the general population. However, in Belgium, there are still high-risk populations such as groups of pregnant women who have shown elevated lead levels. The objective of this study was to evaluate the current situation of lead cord blood levels and identify sources of lead exposure by a questionnair...
متن کاملUmbilical cord blood transplantation
Since the first umbilical cord blood transplantation (CBT) in 1998, cord blood (CB) has now become one of the most commonly used sources of hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation. CBT has advantages of easy procurement, no risk to donor, low risk of transmitting infections, immediate availability and immune tolerance allowing successful transplantation despite human leukocyte antigen disp...
